An update in which nothing is updated...

So, it's been about 7 months since my last post and when you get down to it I'm only 1,000 words farther in. Actually less, since I've getting ready to delete the page-long prologue altogether. I have been working somewhat regularly (give or take a few months) on this, but a lot of what I've been doing has been rewrites and removals. I think the story has improved but not necessarily expanded much. I've also been doing a lot of outside work on it, like working on character profiles and things of that nature. Good for the book in the end, but doesn't "seem" productive.

Which brings me to a decision. Word count-wise, I'm roughly 1/3 finished with the book. Plot-wise, I've already put in most of the main events. Other than character filler and fleshing things out, I don't have a lot more "meat" to add to the plot pot. So.... I had quite a lot of the sequel planned out... do I need to go ahead and put most of this plotline into the first book? Just worry about ONE book before I try to plan a sequel/trilogy?

If you know me at all, you know that I've been writing for nearly my entire life. My first "published" work was "The Rescue Rangers Meet Batman and Robin and a Secret One" in first grade (the secret one was Scooby Doo). Most of the stuff I wrote was, at best, fan fiction, and at worst, plaigarism (though I didn't think of it that way when I was 13). With one other possible exception (which we will put aside for a long time because I have to get over this storyline ADD thing), I've had a certain cast of characters who Just Won't Leave. First they were members of the X-Men, then they were ordinary people, then they were cowboys (and girls!). Around the cowboy era, I wondered if I should just give up on them and start over, since 12 years later I still didn't know what to do with them.
I couldn't, of course. 12 years is a long time. I haven't even known most of the real people in my life for that long. I know these characters too well to just toss them aside. I enjoyed my scifi cowboy world, but something didn't quite click. So I've gone back to what I know: super-powered crimefighting. My main character will never be happy if she's not getting to punch people and make stuff blow up.
I am currently at 28,101 words. I was at 28,101 words three months ago. That's not cool! There are all kinds of thing to blame it on--being tired from work, having other story ideas and needing to get those down on paper to come back to, and World of Warcraft, to name a few.
Yesterday, I went to a booksigning for my all-time favorite author, Tamora Pierce. She talked a lot about what makes a hero, what makes a leader, and why you usually can't be both. A lot of the things she said made me think about my own book, and it got me excited about my characters all over again. I wanted to rush home and start writing. Instead, I went to my friend's house and had far too many "flirtinis" (although I told them I refused to drink anything called a "flirtini" so they called it "hero juice").
But... today at work I wrote. Only 3 notebook pages, but I like what I have. It's the beginning of a re-write of the beginning. I've never been happy with the beginning... this seems better. Tomorrow I'll type it all up and I'll probably lose a bit in the word count department, but the words are better.
Anyways. I'll talk a little bit more about the book or ideas in the book later. This was just my long-winded introduction.
